Resisting the Acid attacks, bullets, rape, stabs and victory of Violence in Guyana 2025

Acid Attacks in the week of PPP/C Victory

Someone inside a white car threw acid on Nirmala Sukraj and Jilicia Leitch at midday on the Wednesday of Guyana Elections 2025.  In April 2025, two people threw acid on pupils and teachers of Chateau Margot Primary School as they walked home. Politicians and the ERC and other condemned and visited the students. There are no reports yet of any condemnation of the recent acid attack or visible support to the survivors. The throwers of acid in April 2025, like the killers of Adrianna Young, have not been found.  Three acid attacks on women and girls in a year.

Bullets in the week of PPP/C Victory

On the night GECOM declared victory for the PPP/C, someone on a bike shot Lolita  Callender. outside her home. The shooter was waiting on a bike for her,. Another man shot and killed Gavin Major on the Thursday after elections when the PPP/C supporters were confident of victory. Other men have shot and killed women and men in the year. There are no reports of where guns are coming from, how many are in the country and the provider of guns to the shooters. A 19 year old man who shot and killed Desiree Hyman might help President Irfaan Ali and others in his Government to understand where the guns come from, and the intentions to shoot and kill.  Because it is getting worse.

Other victories of violences

Ishwar Singh stabbed and killed Paula Abraham before killing others.  Road accidents and a road death. A fight before the elections which left a man dead. Two men and a boy are wanted for raping a girl in June. Other rapes not brought to justice, other who have allegations of rape against them in 'power' now.

Elections were apparently peaceful though.

Resistance

So no 'communal violence' this elections, no protests on streets and so on it seems. Back to business as usual. The blood in the week though , in the year so far, coming from individuals nurtured in our community of violence is flowing with the oil.

We have to resist this violence, and to not go down. The violence has to be named, first, to be addressed. The weapons - guns, knives, acid, the power to weaken state institutions and make them unaccountable;; the oppressive systems to silence dissent or resistance, - have to be identified and removed.

To be replaced with tools and systems to heal, nurture and build.
