The Coil: Dem ah two decent black gyal..
Vidyaratha Kissoon
Two old coolie men gaffing about politics. They used to vote Cheddi Jagan until 2011 when they changed – one to voting for the AFC and the other not voting. They were talking about the former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elisabeth Harper and Cathy Hughes from the AFC. They talked how both are nice pleasant gyal and how they look so much alike and how this race thing so stupid sometimes.
The two old coolie men were talking about ‘decent’ as meaning well-spoken, educated and dignified. Quiet too. Stereotypes of a good woman which it seems that Ramotar and Rohee believed at the Saturday press conference launch where they spoke and Ms Harper did not speak.
Guyana Times in their editorial which could have been written by other not so old coolie men also talk about Ms Harper’s “qualifications; moral stock or her integrity when compared to Nagamootoo “ . They conclude that “She is quite similar to Janet Jagan” – strange because nobody could ever say that Janet Jagan was quiet.
The two old coolie men said the decency of the two black gyal is different from the decency of the feral blaster woman who they cannot believe would go and cuss up a man in his house .
People on social media had things to say after the announcement was made. Social media is not the streets and people are more likely to litter the streets than talk about the merits of the PM candidate for the PPP.
The feral blaster woman who will not be Prime Minister shout WOMAN on social media but not too many people bother. One coolie man said that people forget that Janet Jagan as a woman was President of Guyana. Nobody seemed to take him on either or maybe they did privately.
A youngish coolie man dared to ask ‘What about Dr Anthony’ but nobody seemed to take him on. Dr Anthony was voted most desired to be President in one of the PPP Congresses. And that was the last we heard of President or Prime Minister Anthony. The young man so far still has his Government job and social media PPP people not asking any other questions.
Up to the time of writing, the Janet Jagan’s other legacy the Women’s Progressive Organisation did not shout out anything about WOMAN to anybody. Did the WPO have other WOMEN in mind for the PM candidate ; or the President candidate?
Ms Harper, unlike Ms Hughes, has used social media only to speak to her well wishers and her shocked colleagues and admirers to say that she wants to do good things for Guyana.
Walter Rodney (probably less known than Forbes Burnham or even Cheddi Jagan) in his ancient out of date essay People’s Power No Dictator wrote that:
“..There is another side to the gradual way in which the Burnham dictatorship was established. Guyanese were dealt blow after blow without being knocked out. But we certainly became dazed and stupefied. Our national poet, Martin Carter, was one of the first to comment publicly on this process. He mentioned how the senses of Guyanese were being dulled. Martin Carter called this the “paralysis of the spirit”. Many decent Guyanese were tricked into doing dirty things, believing that these acts would contribute to their own welfare. Instead, each dirty deal simply confirmed the power of the dictator and allowed him to turn around and insult even former supporters. As we would say in Creole, people get use and then they get ‘buse…”
The two old coolie men wondered about the reasons for her resigning her position and joining PPP and politics . They did not talk about the promise of good health care for example since they never heard of GT Mosquito.
One black woman I know is not falling for the dignity/decency/woman thing and said ‘like we have another Sarah Palin’, Her view is that Ms Harper is quiet and does not say much – unlike Ms Hughes – even though Ms Harper has a good career record according to her former Minister Rudy Insanally. So not Sarah Palin.
The current Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett and the other former Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashleigh Jackson are yet to commend Ms Harper’s career record and her suitability for any position which she chooses to apply. But they may do so in time.
So far then it seems that this decent black gyal’s career in international relations is well suited to the PPP. Is it that unlike my friend’s Sarah Palin, the PPP does not want a Prime Minister from the loose civic component who will be too bothered with domestic affairs?
The two old coolie men are not going to vote for decent black gyals or any other decent people they know in the political parties even though they think well of both Ms Harper and Ms Hughes.
One of them might not vote. The other keeps saying that he plans to vote for change. They know other people will be voting to maintain the status quo but are not too bothered. Can any citizen’s decency be determined by which decent black gyal – Elisabeth Harper or Cathy Hughes or any other – they will vote for?
“PS Since this coil was burnt, Ms Harper has given an interview which will be gotayed through the taxpayers and other media outlets .”
