Feedback on the lecturing of the practical part of the 2013 DPC2204 Online Journalism course at the University of Guyana

There were 84 students in this year's DPC2204 course. 28 of the students responded to a survey which was created using the free version of SurveyMonkey.  The responses are cut and paste here. The charts are created with the 'Sample' watermark. I hope that they can be viewed easily.

1. How many lab sessions did you attend?

2.

3. What was your favourite or most enjoyable part of doing the assignment ? What did you learn about the topic you did? (26 responses)

  • The most enjoyable part was actually going out into the public and interviewing people and their take on makeup. People indeed have different preferences when it comes to the brand and the application on makeup.
  • The podcast should have limited or restrained my audience to specific point, time limits and interacting with persons
  • doing the video and podcast, I learnt that one should not be limited by his/her difficulties
  • Creating audio slide shows. I learnt the importance of of the audio slide shows, podcast, video, and text when telling a comprehensive Multi -Media story.
  • nothing
  • everything
  • podcast
The practical aspect....

Working with friends... I learnt that the topic is interesting and not every1 is aware of such influence in society

Doing the pod cast & recording my voice, Interesting background information about the team i dealt with and also summary of the sports hockey

My favourite part was doing the podcast. It was very interesting to do the recording & editing.

well my favorite part for the assignment was going out to interview people and to learn about their views on art. i learn about the types of art and their meaning etc.

editing. I already had knowledge on the topic so not much

Interviewing, and creating an audio slide show

The favourite part was interviewing persons for my assignment I was able to learn thing s I never knew existed.

Recording and taking pictures

well i got to learn a lot abt the University's sporting activities

doing the actual field work and gathering information

editing media content to reflect the ideas you wish deliver to the readers. It was interesting to see how a single scene photographed from a different angle tells a different story

taking the pictures and doing the voxpox

I enjoyed every aspect of my assignment. I've learnt when asking interviewees questions, the questions must be well structured for the response to be very precise in this way editing becomes very easy. The audio slide show gives scope for creativity. The technical aspect was a bit challenging but i think i will do better if i attempt to create another audio slide show or pod cast.

conducting interviews.....what is a podcast....

My favourite part of completing the assignment is composing a slideshow.

Probably listening to the responses given by those interviewed.

Going out an conducting interviews. How to do links and a podcast.

My favorite part was going out and getting the information and clips needed to complete the project.

4. What was the most difficult part of doing the lab assessment?

The editing was a difficult task because more emphasis should have been placed on editing on the classroom.

Following the exact structure of the project outline given by the department...

Nothing

HTLM

None that i can think of. The lecturer was very helpful

the most difficult part of the lab assessment was getting to understand the way things work,eg. like editing.

working in a group

Gaining additional knowledge about online journalism and working together with group members.

The difficult part was when you had to interview persons and as soon they hear what it was about they would say not know or they don't have time.

Remember all the codes

deciding what info to put where. eg what was good for the pd cast and what was good for the text based stories

fixing the pictures for audio slideshow and exporting
Editing a podcast

the audio slide show

I think there was not sufficient time spent on the HTML/CSS, educating students to create the web page.

editing

The most difficult part of the lab assessment is editing the audio and video.

Focusing.

Found nothing difficult about it.

Getting group members to actually do their part of the work, other than that everything was fine.

5. What do you think of the delivery and methodology of the facilitator (Mr Vidyaratha Kissoon)?

Mr. Kissoon was a very straight forward lecturer and he was funny & he made the classes a bit more exciting. He is a wonderful lecturer.

was the most friendliest and polite lecturer, anyone could feel comfortable speaking with

He was clear and very knowledgeable. A bit too fast at times

I think his methods of delivery in regards to the course was great.

okayish

good

ok

he is okay...Delivers well

Was great

Great

He was very good lecturer.

the methodology of the facilitator was very good. I enjoy every class

it was good

He Is awesome and he takes pride in teaching, thus ensuring all his students have gain new knowledge before leaving the lab.

The deliver of the programme was good but needed to be a little more confident.

He's a very nice man! Thought very well

It was g8

its is very interesting and simple but needed practice

Very illustrative, and instructive

Very good teaching methods.informal and use of class discussions. very approachable, patient and involved

I think he is a good facilitator but lab time allotted was not sufficient.
good

He was okay overall. But I really don't understand computer algorithum when it comes to creating a website.

Tries; the content is somewhat boring so there's not much to do to make it interesting. He keeps it light with minimal pressure, which is great because sometimes I forget we're in a class doing work. However, classes are still boring.

It was good.

He's a very good teacher, different from the other lecturers and he teaches us like if he's talking to a friend.

6. Which of the following resources did you use during the course?
 (Blue : Website )

 7. What recommendations would you make to improve the lab part of the Online Journalism course?
he lab needs computer systems that actually works and there should be enough computers to facilitate all students. Also, since the course is an online one, there should have been internet access to show the process of uploading information on a blog.

more practical work emphasis being placed outside classroom

one on one sessions. This would allow the lecturer to see first hand the areas each student needs help in

It should be very student friendly.definitely needs more resources.

More practical editing sessions using audacity.

more handouts and how to's

more pratical sessions

Change the limitations of the podcasting and the video slide shows

Just keep doing the same thing 4 me

More lab Session and/ Lab Session in smaller groups

I think that internet access should have been available to the students during lab session since it was an online journalism course.

i would like for students to have a one on one interaction with the teacher, in this way you would be able to tell if the student is well aware of what he/ she is doing or how much they now about online journalism.

i have none the class was ok as it was

None.... it's absolutely amazing just the way it is.

1. Better working computers. 2. Better internet setup/connections. 3. Better installation of software.

I think sir doing a great job just keep it up

a little more practical during class time

have practical sessions, most of the time the lab could not facilitate such sessions. The internet was always off and could not get any practice.

NIL

More lab sessions and should be done at an individual level

Give students more lab time to do the practicals. guide them doing the work so that when they leave the lab they should feel confident on their own. Remember students have different learning rate.

needs to focus more on the editing aspect...needs to give individual training to students....

The lecturer should stop changing his mind when it comes to the requirements for the group assessment. From the inception the lecturer should state exactly what he wants.

Make things interesting by grouping people together and asking them to create a website using a general theme; that'd help greatly with the HTML. It's easy to forget tags because we'd use them in class exercises and not again after. Creating something interesting will make it fun to use tags. Also, go back to the basics of NotePad. Komposer does a lot of the work for us (like if we enter an opening tag Komposer automatically adds a closing tag). It makes us lazy and it's easy to slip up because it's being corrected for us. The bring a photo exercise was good; I had fun working with an image I like. Keep doing interactive things like that. I don't know how possible it is but more computers need to be serviced for use. Weaker students are not getting enough practice. Generally, when grouped, the stronger student will be the one doing most of the work to save time while the other sits there bored, not learning enough. Maybe this can be rectified by offering an extra day or two to make classes smaller and more interactive.

Provide internet service for students. Afterall, it's online journalism. All computers should be working.
