infidelity, death threats, cocaine, corruption and the Cables
A lot of us are fascinated by what the US Embassy wrote about Guyana,. The Wikileaks revelations are telling us about the US concerns about the appointment of Commissioner Greene, about the death threats against public officials, about the opinions on matters. The cables are from 'intelligence' officials and funnily enough, they do not say anything new.. they reflect all the rumours which rumble around Georgetown. The US Embassy reported all the gossip as it happened in Georgetown it seems.
I blame Burnham for my inherent suspicions of the American, British and Canadian Governments and their agendas. The Iraqi war was based on some evidence that Saddam Hussain had Weapons of Mass Destruction. The cables are not comprehensive. The Guyana Government kept asking for evidence that Commissioner Greene was involved in drug trafficking. But no evidence was given it seems unless the missing cables will show that evidence.
There are death threats reported to the embassy, and against the Ambassador. Those are serious, but as one reads the cables, you get a sense of contempt for the people in Guyana. This cable HAPPILY NEVER AFTER: PRESIDENT TO DIVORCE goes into all the rumours about the President and Ms Varshinie Singh's personal life (the cable refers to Ms Singh by her first name)
The President has said that all of this is amusing. He is probably laughing because nothing has changed, or he knew all this anyway. We are laughing at some of the imagery.. of the Commissioner breaking down in tears and talking about 'girls' and Dr Luncheon President Jagdeo's legacy has been endorsed by many Guyanese - though from the US Cables it might seem that some people do their obeisances while also telling the US Embassy other things.
History has shown that the US Government has not been a friend to have many post-colonial Governments.
The opposition might want to celebrate all these revelations.. except that the US Embassy cables on them are probably also not flattering and also full of the kind of gossip and so on.
So what?
The time has passed, the big three have not broken off relationships with Guyana. Those who have to go to the big three countries go to them. The drug dealers are still here judging by the large seizures of narcotics.. and they are feeding consumption in the USA. As many of the third word have said.. if there is no demand in the US, there will be no supply.
How many of us care what the US officials think about us? I have had my own experience with some of the contempt of diplomats and others for Guyanese.- not only the politicians but others. One of the cables refer to information supplied by "Georgetown cognoscenti" .. sounding like Georgetown cocktail circuit people.
So like the President said.. amusing, light hearted diversion., reinforcement of what it seems as a country we suspect but cannot prove, and which they faithfully reported. More cables are probably being generated in the same genre. Maybe the US State Department should just release them now for us so we could all have a laugh.
