God, Obeah an' Family Secrets

Sammy Braff ask when he gun see de review of dese plays an i gat wuk fuh do.. but den meh head like tek on stupidness instead of de real wuk I supposed to be doin'.
I been on de Monday nite.... an' all I hear is how I miss a good play "Shadows" how I would ah like it.
Fus.. to big up Theatre Guild fuh trying fuh keep ting from slipping.. an' bigging up de yute dem, all ah dem fuh wuking pun dis play.. when dey could ah deh pun de road karner limin' or smoking coke or tiefin' or whatever it is dat yute who aint gat nuttin fuh do , does do. So big up to dem.

since I nevah write a play review before.. I guh online an I see a ting hey..
part ah me prablem is dat i was too cheap fuh buy de programme so I aint know who de actors dem is in de play dem.

God
De fus play was Pious, by Kojo McPherson an' directed by Mosa Mathifa (gyurl look cool an' calm de nite.. ). De cast include a big woman who come on stage fuh de fus time.. an' dat was good.. in a place in which a lot of people dont get to do nice tings fuh de fus time.. ; an two young guys. Me cyan remembah dem name.. sorry. Dey were good.. de big woman played 'Granny', de young boy Delroy and
de odda young man was de Bishop. De casting was good, de chemistry was good.. granny look like all de oddah granny wid a grandson name delroy. De fust part .. tekin off shoes an' dem ting.. aint mek sense.. de fus 10 minutes was a lil too slow but all de emotion an' ting flow nice from dem. De Bishop man had some awkward moments.. kind of like when he aint too sure what to do while de oddah person talking.
Plot -widout spoiler - Delroy and Granny livin' nice nice, Granny like she God  an' she Bishop John (dis Kojo bai.. I wondah why 'e use Bishop John.. dere is anoddah bishop john in guyana dat nuff nuff people doan like) , an' Delroy.. Delroy don't like God an' e don't like bishop john.. granny get money, delroy get vex when he ear granny give it away an den a whole set a secret come out.. and the final scene was in a funeral parlour. beautifully done..
So at dis stage i suppose to write about theme and element and style.. but i ain know what dem ting mean..
Costume.. great costume, de part when granny try to fix de bishop tie was nice, set.. also good. everyting was used (Andre Sobryan had told us a long a time ago that every prop should be used on the stage or move it off) - even de picture of Jesus on de wall...
de simple scene in de funeral part was powerful.. i tink de lighting help wid dat (no funeral dont happen in de night, but dat was not in question here) and if real life dis final scene would ah been in crowded sandy's and somebody would ah get a good lickin' when de secret come out..

But de secret nevah comes out.. we know dat dere is a child molester who is sorry for 'not getting through' to the survivor of child abuse who mek a decision. So.. dere is no 'closure' really.. Kojo seh dat he write de play to see how ppl can be blinded by their faith and close eyes to what might be bad about their blind faith.. and miss out on things.. in this case of course, blind faith in the Bishop.

What I thought of this one.. it was good, though the emotional bits went on for a minute or two too long.. but my favourite scene had to be the last one where the lighting was such you could only hear granny but could not see her face.. I hope they do it again.

Obeah and Family secrets
The second play, The Storm is written by Tivia Collins and was directed by Timonlyn Barclay. De cast include nuff people, young people mostly.. but dey all seem to fit dey role, though the maid Mary .. sometimes came over as a younger woman than she should have been, so it was lil confusin'. All familiar comedy elements hey.. yuh had Grace.. who aint know fuh talk good, she data Rose, she husband Ely, a  young man Chris and de maid Mary..
Ely get a dally from a obeah woman.. an' he does do he ritual an' he prosperin' . he family not to happy (dere is a picture of mary on de wall but it never referred to so not sure what it was doing dere.. ) Ah mus admit ah get lil vex.. ah mean.. we gat nuff religion hey. and if Granny from before could believe in she Jesus, and me in my whatever.. den why cyant Ely believe in he dally? An dere was dis ting dat seem to poke fun at obeah. so Granny praying to Jesus is not as funny as Ely doing he ting roun' he dally..

Anyway.. somebody tief de dally, nuff story happen an' den family secret come out..
Costume.. arite I guess do.. Grace supposed to be a rich woman an she changing clothes too much an' ah want fuh know if rich ppl does eat dem breakfus in dem house in high heel shoe.. ah mean.. ah dont know how rich ppl does live..dey does wear de good clothes when dey eating? suppose dey mess it up? and dey does shine deh shoe in deh livin room or in deh bedroom - ah mean.. we does shine shoe pun de back step

nobody else change costume much.. de Set.. had nuff nuff ting in it.. but i aint sure if some of it didn't get in de way of de actors.. mary had to walk around de table.. de carpet seem like it gun trip up somebady.. ah mean.. we know is rich people..

Tivia seh de play was about family secret an' now we hear how Arnold Schwaznegger mek pickney wid he maid.. it look like dis is a camman ting. Again, Mary... played the jokey role good, and de fightin mad role good, but de cryin' ting.. nah.. de wife was always shouting.. .. well, is family secrets. De girl who play Rose, dem seh is she fus time, an' I tink she do real good.. so.. dis one, had laff.. but de ending.. well it aint really end..

Festival continuing on 27 May with the last two plays.
