Endings and beginnings..

Hindu philosophy advises that concepts of time are illusions, and that creation and destruction are part of a never ending cycle. New Years Day could be a day for resolutions, for making changes, or continuing the same old things.

The moonrise was beautiful on the seawall tonight. The heavy tides earlier in the day calmed down. As I ran this evening, I tried to empty my head of the things bothering me . The head swirled though, some of the things have been in my head for ever.. and no New  Year can make me rid of them.

Today I watched the two satire shows 'This is we' and 'Stretched Out Magazine'. I was shocked when I saw how much fun was being made of the allegations of child abuse against Mr McKoy, or rather fun being poked at 'kwame'.  Is this how Guyana will be dealing with these allegations? There will be no investigation or resolution? Will the Rights of the Child Commission always be tainted by this? Does the Minister of Human Services not intend to do anything about investigating her nominee to the Commission? What about the Members of Parliament who had a lot to say, and none of them raise the matter in the National Assembly or ask for an investigation as the Constitution allows?

The slur of pedophile is an ugly one. No innocent person deserves that slur, and it is unfortuate that the courts of Stretched Out Magazine and This is we will be used to judge these allegations. The reporters who kept the story up have shut up now that the President has asked for help in finding the child involved. Mr Benschop who raised the allegations has also gone silent.

Red Thread has been leading a weekly protest and now I wonder, if we are in a minority in Guyana, those of us who think sexual violence against children is horrible and not something to joke about.  Is this why the Government continues to delay the passage of the new Sexual Offences legislation and the President cannot assent to the Protection of the Children Bill which was passed in the National Assembly?

The New Year's does not bring anything new really, the battles which we assumed were finished have to be continued. Energy has to be found to sustain them. Ideally, we should be able to focus on things which can build.  When running, the mind can wander on things which have been achieved as well - the fact that you are out there should be a celebration. But it is difficult though.

The moonlight on the seawall hides the rubbish on the beach, or sometimes turns the rubbish into shapes which don't look so ugly. God willing, I hope that by the next time I see a beautiful moonrise, that some of the stuff is no longer in my head.  Maybe the moonlight will not make them seem so terrible and I will be like everybody else. This could be the beginning of the end of the work done to deal with child abuse in Guyana.
